ALIMENTARY NORMS AND GUIDELINES FOR THE BRAZILIAN POPULATION
Published in 2002 by the Danone Institute of Brazil, this book is intended for professionals and aims to initiate a multidisciplinary, scientific and technical discussion about the accuracy of the Food Pyramid as a tool of orientation for different population groups. It finally provides professionals as well as the general public with guidelines and norms for a balanced diet, accurately validated and usefull for nutritional education.
"Ignorance and widespread lack of information on food and nutrition matters are present among poor and rich people alike. Brazil as an emerging country is no exception. A large part of its poor population is not eating the quantity and quality of food they need every day. Another group is, increasingly, engaging in unhealthy food habits. Food and nutrition education should be considered as a priority for the country’s population."
Prof. José E. Dutra de Oliveira,
University of São Paulo, President of Danone Institute of Brazil.
A unique initiative...
A large national education program was planned, bringing together experts from all over Brazil. A multi-step project was proposed to develop Brazilian local norms and food guidelines in order to improve nutritional knowledge and status. They were tested in different socio-economic groups to check, at the community level, their understanding of the suggested written educational messages. The messages have been adapted to different areas of Brazil, taking into consideration local food production / intake, traditions, taboos, etc.
Educational programs were also proposed to reach local government authorities, professional, teachers etc, showing the importance of food and nutrition to everyone, everywhere. Several meetings, conferences and publications came out of this initiative, as part of a permanent and continuous nutritional program.
