The 2001 Award Ceremony

The 2001 Danone International Prize for Nutrition was awarded to Professor Alfred Sommer on August 30th, 2001 during an official award-giving ceremony attended by close to 400 participants . The historic Palais Ferstel located in the old center of Vienna provided a beautiful setting for this ceremony.

Professor Bernard Dastugue, Representative of the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale, partner of the Prize, spoke of the growing importance of nutrition in medical research, due to its impact on many aspects of human health.

Professor Barbara Schneeman, Chairperson of the 2001 Danone International Prize for Nutrition
Dr. Barbara Schneeman, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the 2001 Prize, explained the Prize selection procedure, formally introduced the laureate and underlined the impact of his team's work on vitamin A deficiency and the beneficial effects of vitamin A supplementation on reducing blindness and improving the lives of millions of children.

Finally, Professor Alfred Sommer talked about the studies carried out with his team, the results of their work and the concrete implementation thereof; he concluded with an outline of future research work focused on the benefits of vitamin A supplementation on childbearing-aged women.
