History
A Historical Commitment of the Danone Brand to Health
In 1919, Isaac Carasso was struck by the sight of so many children in Barcelona suffering from intestinal disorders. At the time, he was very interested in the research of Metchnikoff (1909 Nobel Prize) on yogurt lactic acid bacteria. He bought some lactic cultures from the Pasteur Institute in Paris and launched the first Danone yogurts in Barcelona, distributed through pharmacies.
His son, Daniel Carasso, set up business in Paris in 1929. When they were first introduced, Danone yogurts were prescribed by physicians.
70 years later, consumers still enjoy the health benefits of Danone yogurt and of milk fermented with probiotics such as Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus casei.
Health, a value historically linked to Danone products, is today our core commitment. The Danone Institutes worldwide and the Danone International Prize for Nutrition reflect this commitment, and enable the brand to play a significant civic role through concrete actions far beyond yogurt production.
